Black coated models:
The black-coated models require more maintenance: the top of the Island must be kept clean and dry, especially at the base of the cone, to prevent rust. The use of a cover is recommended.
SAFETY
Metal surfaces become extremely hot during use and can cause serious burns if touched. Burning temperatures can be very high—always supervise children and pets around the fireplace.
In New Zealand, outdoor fireplaces must be situated at least 1 metre away from any building or legal boundary. However, to light the fire, a permit may require a minimum distance of 3 metres from structures, hedges, or other combustible materials. Check local council guidelines to ensure compliance with placement, safety, and fire restrictions in your area.
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE:
Corten or powder coated steel fire pits will naturally develop surface rust over time—this is not a defect but a natural process.
To maintain black powder-coated fireplaces, clean it with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Grates should be coated with a thin layer of edible oil regularly to prevent rusting. Use a cover if applicable when not in use to protect from the elements. If the surface becomes scratched, clean and repaint the area to prevent rust formation. Avoid excessive heat from large, blazing fires, keeping temperatures at a moderate level ensures long-lasting performance and preventative peeling.
